Enter Sandman

Something’s wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren’t of snow white
Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragon’s fire
And of things that will bite
Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light
Enter night

That's the song most Keralites should be singing considering the trend I could assuage from my short time spent among the Gods and Dogs in Kerala.

Despite amazing changes brought in by the current government, most people in Kerala, and even the so called "educated middle class" seem to be acting like pea-brained retards when it comes to facts. And Keralology, a term discovered by me to describe the unique subject that Kerala is, seems to be a science more complex and intriguing than we ever imagined.

There is a large group of people in Kerala who seem to be predicting and hoping for a victory of the Leftist parties in the coming elections. If it were based on sensible thoughts and facts, I would not be so worried. But their views and decisions are based on ignorance and hair-brained politics.

Always creating roadblocks for industries and labor focused sectors, the leftist trade unions have ensured millions worth of investments have been scuttled from the state and nation for the sake of votes. But the current government smartly created new Information Technology policies that ensured that the growth of the state in the coming years will be driven by knowledge and service based industries.

Frankly I am getting bored writing about the pathetic and disappointing affairs of the state, and I keep hoping against hope all these efforts will do some good in the long run. I keep worrying if soon I will become another politically obsessed whacko with thick moustache, wearing a mundu and shouting slogans! I hope not! Because thats not me. I love my otherwise pleasant and busy life! I have no political allegiance. I love my hobbies. I love my friends. I love my India. But this blog is just based on my hope for Kerala, where I was born, because I really believe its now or never for the state.

And no, am not quitting this blog just yet :) If anybody is willing to join this blog as a member please let me know. You can participate with your articles, thoughts, views and at times silence, rather than have the let things be attitude. I am sure every word and every thought will be worthwhile.

I just hope everyone reading this can make better sense of the facts and it will in some way reflect in the coming elections!

The Facts

The Economic Review 2005 of the Kerala government states that the state economy had a phenomenal growth rate of 9.2 percent during the financial year 2004-05 as against the Indian economy which grew at 7.5%.

Per Capita Income of Kerala became Rs. 27,048 as compared to the Indian average of
Rs. 20,813

The industrial growth rate, which was negative in 2002-03, increased by 7.14 percent in 2003-04 and by 5.77 percent in 2004-05

Rs. 35, 429 crores of investment already approved in the next couple of years across all sectors

The tourism industry flourished with foreign tourist arrivals increasing by 17.28 percent

Kerala also has reason to cheer with suicides declining by 4.08 percent over the 2003 figure of 9,438

The last couple of years have seen an increased participation of scholars and scientists in policymaking bodies, a welcome trend that may pave the way for the integration of scientific knowledge in programmes and policies that affect the society

Kerala continues to lead in key health indicators like birth rate, infant mortality and life expectancy

The number of unemployed came down from 4 million in 2003-04 to 3.7 million in 2004-05, a great achievement considering the fact that it has only increased every year until now

Keralology That would be an interesting study in indeed.

The economic stats certainly look very encouraging. I feel credit should be given to OC's investor and growth friendly policies. So mind curry do not give up your hopes and aspirations for Kerala just yet, for I am sure from all these messages you have posted, at least a few people (not just NRKs)are waking up from their reverie to realize the destiny of their state is in their own hands.

You don’t need to be a political wizard to predict that the next govt will be formed by the lefties. For the past so many decades, its been working on an alternating logic.

Are we, (the people of Kerala) ‘literate’ and politically aware as we claim we are? Isnt it just a mask which we all like to wear to cover up our unhappiness about the prevailing socio-political system, our inborn laziness and short term memory?

I agree with you. Trade unions are the worst thing that can happen to any state which aims at developing itself. We are infested with political parasites that have grown fat by sucking our resources from the very root.

I know these are just cynical observations of a pessimist. Can go on and on... but does it really help anybody’s cause?

Its too soon to give up mind curry. Many a times I too feel the same. But there is always light at the end of the tunnel(or so I hope). We need to keep our hopes on the youth and steer them away from the socialist crap. If we can create enough buzz among the youth of our state who are more likely to read blogs like these in the long run we would be successful. I know it is a long and hard fight and its worth trying for.

I think it's great that you and Puthiya Viplavam have started a dialogue. I would read his posts with great interest, take printouts and show it to my Dad. He would say that it was so good to see voices like these emerging from the rabble.
So Mind Curry, don't get frustrated when people come here, throw up their hands and say " mallu's are such imbeciles, there is no hope" etc. Just go on writing. Me on my part will try and drag people to your post like I would do for PP's posts :))
Your greatest enemy will be apathy. The apathy of the mallu who has left Kerala for greener pastures and who thinks that he has escaped it all and now doesn't care what's happening in Kerala.
But voices like yours will be heard sooner or later and hopefully will trickle down to the youth of Kerala who I think will be the catalyst for change.

In health care, it would be interesting to see what the life expectancy would be if accidental deaths were not included. That is a better indicator of the general health of the population.

About the 9.2% growth: It may be more accidental than planned. The left and the trade unions have been a real pain, and sometimes their policies do a lot of harm to our economy and our society. But we need to give credit where it is due: IT and Tourism as sunshine industries for Kerala was first mooted by the Nayanar govt of 1987. Personally, that is the best govt. in Kerala I have seen.
That perception is also tinted by the fact that it followed what I consider the worst administration: That of K. K.

@ vinod - i think most health indicators talk about life expectancy at birth, and that does not include accidental deaths, and is hence a good indicator of health status. i agree nayanar has been one of the more tolerable CM's from the LDF, and to an extent was successful in masking the other fools in the clan. the the late 1980s were the beginnings of reforms in india, and that to a certain extent trickled down to kerala as well, nonetheless, accepting that trickle is commendable. all said and done, with nayanar having passed away, there is not much of even a remotely sensible leader in the LDF camp now. and add to it, leaders like Achu and Pin, we dont have much choice. i hope i dont appear as biased, but i think OC has done more than any person can in one year and he truly deserves a full five year term to prove his capability.

thank you for stopping by with your insights. really appreciate it.

Kerala is one state waiting to have massive investments by NRI's if the red brigade stops interfering in daily affairs.
